Bound volume containing the manuscripts, in the hand of Henry Reed, of a series of 9 public lectures he gave on English literature at the University of Pennsylvania, in Chapel Hall, from 3 January to 28 February 1850. The lectures were published in their entirety after Reed's death, under the editorship of his brother William B. Reed, in: Lectures on English literature, from Chaucer to Tennyson (Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1855), p. 1-308. The manuscript contains notes in the hand of William Reed, comprising his editor's notes for the publication. Also, on the title pages of the 7th and 8th lectures clippings are pasted in, evidently from the publisher's advertisement for the 1855 publication, giving the content of the lecture (the same summaries appear in the printed book). Please note the following irregularities in the manuscript: In Lecture 1, p. 33-36 actually belong to Lecture 2, and p. 33-36 of Lecture 2 belong to Lecture 1. The conclusion of Lecture 1, p. 37-44, is found at the back of Lecture 7; the actual conclusion to Lecture 7, p. 37-41, was mistakenly bound into a volume of miscellaneous fragments contained in the present collection (see Ms. Coll. 859, Box 9). The last two pages in the volume, which are unnumbered, appear to comprise a sort of preamble to Lecture 8; Reed announces an additional lecture beyond the eight that were planned, and conveys references pertaining to Milton, Dryden, and Pope, reflecting back on Lecture 7. In this regard, see, again, the volume of fragments referred to above (Ms. Coll 859, Box 9): leaves numbered i to v, comprise an addendum to remarks on Pope from a previous lecture, and could also be part of a preamble to Lecture 8 in the present manuscript.
